Creating Belonging: How We Can Better Support LGBTQ+ Youth in Foster Care

Every young person deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported - especially within the foster care system. But for LGBTQ+ youth, that sense of belonging can often feel out of reach.
At Brighter Futures, we’re committed to creating inclusive, affirming spaces for every child and teen we serve. This Pride Month, we’re shining a light on the unique experiences of LGBTQ+ youth in foster care - and sharing practical ways we can all do better to support them.
Why Representation Matters
LGBTQ+ youth are significantly overrepresented in the foster care system. According to national studies, up to 30% of youth in care identify as LGBTQ+ - a much higher percentage than in the general population. Many enter care after facing rejection, hostility, or unsafe conditions at home related to their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Once in care, these young people often face additional challenges, including:
Frequent placement changes
Discrimination or misunderstanding
Mental health struggles stemming from trauma
Lack of access to affirming care or adults who understand their needs
Foster care should be a place of healing - and that means making sure LGBTQ+ youth feel safe to be themselves, every step of the way.
Creating Safe, Affirming Spaces
Affirming care doesn’t require expertise - just intention, empathy, and a willingness to learn. Foster parents and support staff can make a powerful difference by:
Using chosen names and pronouns consistently and respectfully
Creating an inclusive environment with visible signs of support (like books or posters)
Avoiding assumptions about a child’s identity or experiences
Responding with empathy, curiosity, and nonjudgment
Educating themselves on LGBTQ+ identities, terminology, and challenges
These everyday actions show young people that they are seen and valued - exactly as they are.
Affirming Care in Action
At Brighter Futures, we support our foster families and teams with tools and training to provide culturally competent, trauma-informed care that includes:
Ongoing education about gender identity, sexual orientation, and inclusive practices
Support for foster families learning how to create welcoming environments
Coordination with therapists and specialists experienced in working with LGBTQ+ youth
A commitment to advocacy, belonging, and inclusive care across our programs
Affirming care is not a one-time gesture - it’s an ongoing commitment to showing up with compassion and respect.

This Pride Month and Beyond
Supporting LGBTQ+ youth isn’t just something we do in June - it’s part of our mission year-round. This Pride Month, we reaffirm our promise to foster an environment where every young person can feel proud of who they are and hopeful for what comes next.
Because at Brighter Futures, we believe every child deserves more than safety - they deserve belonging.
